Windows Live Sky Drive

Windows Live Sky Drive from Microsoft

Site Logo:“Password-protected online file storage. Always available where you need it.”

This Microsoft provided site offers 5 Gigabytes of of free storage accessible from any PC with internet access. Files are initially organized into three main folders that controls security access (personnel, shared, and public). With in these main folder you can create additional folders to help organize your files.

To setup an account you must register with a windows live ID. Files contained in the shared folder can only be accessed by those you grant access to plus they must have a windows live id. Files in the public folder are accessible by everyone. You can links to your blog and websites provided by other webhost to these files. SkyDrive even helps with the links by providing embed code you can add to your site that links to specific files.

SkyDrive is tied into Windows Live Space. It provides your own free blog, photo gallery, even organizer, and who knows what. You don’t have to use this other stuff but you can check it out. So far everything seems to be free.

Files in the public Th Public folder are accessible to everyone. So everyone can link to your files to download them.

It would be nice to know how often files are being download and from where. The site does not appear to track any download statistics.

Conclusion:

Five Gigabytes of free online storage with personnel and public access is great. You just need to get a free Windows Live Id.

  1. On the subject of file backup, sharing and storage …

Online backup is becoming common these days. It is estimated that 70-75% of all PC’s will be connected to online backup services with in the next decade.

Thousands of online backup companies exist, from one guy operating in his apartment to fortune 500 companies.

Choosing the best online backup company will be very confusing and difficult. One website I find very helpful in making a decision to pick an online backup company is:

    http://www.BackupReview.info

This site lists more than 400 online backup companies in its directory and ranks the top 25 on a monthly basis.

  2. Sky Drive has updated its size to 25 GB. I still believe file size limit is still 50 MB.

Here is a post on how an IT professional uses Live Mesh to backup all his files.
